A coffee shop with a long history in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle
Black Dog Coffee in Shenandoah Junction, WV has been a staple in the community since 2006. Every time I travel by it (which is quite often since it’s conveniently located within eyesight of Route 9), I am tempted to stop. You can taste the passion for coffee in every cup. My personal favorite drink is the chilly dog, a sweet and creamy cold brew where you pick the flavor. And Black Dog has a vast selection of flavors to choose from, even more non-conventional flavors like banana. But let’s get back to the cold brew, because it is truly something special! A lot of times I’m disappointed in the taste of cold brew. It can be weak, watery, and even bitter, especially when I’ve attempted to make it at home myself! However, Black Dog’s cold brew is unmatched. It’s strong, smooth, and even a little sweet. Although I’d recommend the cold brew, their espresso drinks and coffee drinks are also smooth, strong, and easy to go down.
Where can you find Black Dog Coffee?
Although their shop is located in Kearneysville, Black Dog Coffee can be found all across the Eastern Panhandle and beyond! They set up a booth each season at the Charles Town Famers Market, which is a must to check out if you haven’t before, but you can also find it in different restaurants, stores, and farm markets, like Orr’s Farm Market, Taylor’s Farm Market, Cross Creek Cafe, and O’Hurley’s General Store, to name a few. As someone who loves to support local, it’s great to see other small businesses supporting one another. Plus, any place I can find a cup of Black Dog Coffee is a win in my book! I’ll touch more on it later, but Black Dog reciprocates by supporting other local businesses too! Another great way to enjoy Black Dog Coffee is to buy either their coffee beans/grounds or their k-cups, which is my favorite way to enjoy Black Dog’s coffee at home. I would consider myself picky when it comes to k-cups, and there is no competition to Black Dogs.
Dogs welcome!
With a name like Black Dog, it may not be surprising that dogs are welcome in the store. In fact, the story of Black Dog starts with a beloved dog named Bear. So, if you are like me and love coffee and dogs, you will feel at home as soon as you walk into the store.
What else can you find in the shop?
When you walk into the shop, you will first be met with the delicious aroma of coffee. Then, you may notice an array of retail items on the shelf, including chocolate, salsas, and soaps, among many other locally-made items. Some days food trucks will park in Black Dog’s lot, as well. They also sell different flavors of Krumpe’s donuts once a week!
Conclusion
Black Dog Coffee is a staple of our Eastern Panhandle community and for good reason. Their story and coffee are special, and they thrive on supporting other small businesses in the community. With an amazing product and a collaborative style, it’s no wonder they continue to have such a strong presence across the area. So, the next time you are out and pass Black Dog Coffee, stop by….you may even run into a few dogs!
