I recently stumbled across a local staple in our community that I had yet to visit in the many years I’ve lived in the area – Bolivar Bread Bakery. I love the Harper’s Ferry area but am sometimes deterred from going because it’s not always easy to find parking. (Disclaimer: If you have never been to the area, though, I encourage you to come visit! The views are breathtaking, and the history is alive. They offer buses to help transport visitors since parking is limited in the small, historic town.) The Bolivar Bread Bakery is located at 914 Washington Street, so parking is much easier to find. In fact, they have a small parking lot in the back, as well as street parking out front. It is very convenient to swing by to grab bread or a sweet treat!

Price $$$ out of 5
I felt the price for their products was very reasonable. The loaves of bread range from about 5 dollars up to about 10 dollars, but this is fresh, specialty loaves of bread. The pastries range from about 3 dollars up to 6 dollars, but again, these are specialty items made from scratch. They serve a wide variety of breads and sweets that you won’t find at a grocery store.

I love the charm of Harper’s Ferry, but the best part of the Bolivar Bread Bakery is the amazing smell that hits your nose the moment you enter the building! There is no question whatsoever once you enter the building as to if they bake their own bread; the proof is in the smell! The staff was also incredibly friendly, the store was very clean, and the building still gives off that lovely Harper’s Ferry charm. It was clear why it is such a community staple once I entered.

The Bolivar Bread Bakery is a bakery first, but they do offer coffee from another local shop, the Black Dog Coffee Company. I really appreciate when local businesses support other local businesses, and I happen to love Black Dog Coffee, so I was delighted to see that they offer that for customers. They didn’t appear to offer espresso drinks or things like that, but I can appreciate a good cup of hot coffee, especially paired with a sweet treat!

I was in the mood for a sweet treat when I visited Bolivar Bread Bakery, so I ordered, on the recommendation of their staff, a chocolate dipped coconut macaroon. And I’m so glad I did! The chocolate tasted on the darker side to me and the coconut was fresh. It wasn’t overly sweet, and my toddler even loved it! I did not try any of the bread, but the everything bagel sourdough bread was recommended to me by several people, so I do plan to go back to try it soon. They have many other bread options and pastries, too. I also noticed that the bakery has gluten free and vegan options.

Experience ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐ out of 5
I cannot rave enough about my experience at the Bolivar Bread Bakery. The staff was very kind and helpful, and the coconut macaroon was the best macaroon I’ve ever had. My only regret is that I did not try the bread yet. The bakery is open every day but Monday and Tuesday and the bread is baked fresh every day. I plan on buying bread from the Bolivar Bread Bakery for my family, and I am so happy to have found this local staple!
