In preparation for the snow event this past weekend, my family stopped in at Sclafani’s NY Bagels in Kernstown, VA (one exit past Winchester on I-81 South) to get some bagels to enjoy over the next few days. Sclafani’s has the feel of a traditional NY bagel shop, with plenty of flavors of bagels and cream cheese to choose from, as well as sandwiches and other pastries. It is one of our favorite bagel spots in the area, and whether you are stopping in for a dozen bagels or just a bagel sandwich, the food always hits!

The prices at Sclafani’s are very reasonable. You can buy bagels by the each or by the dozen(s) (call ahead for orders larger than one dozen), and they also have deals. For this visit, we did the Dozen Deal, and for about $26 we got a dozen bagels, a plain cream cheese, and a flavored cream cheese. We also ordered a bagel sandwich to share that morning, which ended up being about $7 and included egg, meat, cheese, and cream cheese (pro tip, add cream cheese to your breakfast sandwich!)

Sclafani’s may not be located in the heart of downtown Manhattan, but it definitely has recreated that whole vibe really nicely. When you first walk in, you can see all the bagels that are available, and all the baking and kneading is occurring on sight. They have some seating, but most people probably get to-go orders. All in all, it is an up-tempo, fast-paced bagel shop serving delicious bagels.

There is not a lack of options here at Sclafani’s. They have about 20 flavors of bagels, around 10 flavors of cream cheese, and they have rotating special flavors as well.
For our order of a dozen bagels, we got a mixture. The plain bagels are great if you aren’t too adventurous. The cheddar bagels are perfect for making your own bagel sandwich. The blueberry and French toast bagels are sweet, and their everything bagel lives up to the name. The star of the show for me, however, is the cinnamon raisin bagel, which has the perfect blend of cinnamon and raisins throughout the batter. In addition to the plain cream cheese, we also got the flavor of the week, which was jalapeno bacon. It had a serious kick but was really good on the plain and cheddar bagels.
Lastly, we also got a bagel sandwich. We went with bacon, egg, and cheese, and asked them to add plain cream cheese to it. This is a game changer, as it makes it that much creamier and succulent. I would highly recommend Sclafani’s if you are in the mood for a bagel sandwich, as they use high quality ingredients and everything is made fresh.

Reviews are always going to be strong when there are no issues with the order or the food. Unfortunately on this trip, Sclafani’s forgot to put in our cinnamon raisin bagels, so we were three short when we got home. I called them, and not only did they refund me a generous portion of what we paid, they had us stop back in and gave us an extra half-dozen for the mistake. These are the types of moments where customer service shines through. I was very impressed with how they handled that mistake, and it just reinforced why we think this is the premier bagel shop in the area!
