Your favorite Foodies team attended the Potion Making Event at Devil’s Due Distillery last weekend. We had actually done something similar to this in Philadelphia a few years ago, so we knew what to expect. It was an awesome time getting to create our own signature cocktails, all of which were Halloween themed. We donned our costumes and Halloween attire and brewed some potions that surely would have warranted a reproachful look from Professor Snape!
Price 💲💲💲💲out of 5
This event had a set price of just under $80 per person. While that is on the higher side, you did get two hours of entertainment, enough ingredients to make three full-sized, signature cocktails, two dedicated mixologists who not only helped us, but explained every ingredient and how it fit within the flavor profile, and even some little snacks and water to use as a palate cleanser between drinks.

Devil’s Due is the perfect place for a Halloween-themed event. They held the event in the backroom where all the aged barrels are, which gave us a rustic yet very comfortable setting. The staff did a great job decorating for Halloween, and nearly everyone was either dressed up or wearing some kind of event-specific attire. Many people were dressed in wizard robes, and there was even a group of ladies dressed up as Beauxbatons students. We even had an appearance from Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy!

With the price of admission, we received instructions and ingredients for three full-sized, signature cocktails. The first was the Vanishing Ghost, which included their own Mango Moonshine, multiple syrups, purees, and juices, ginger beer, and a ghost made out of cotton candy. After shaping your cotton candy and putting glitter on it, you pour your drink mixture over your ghost (or drop your ghost into the drink mixture), and watch as the ghost vanishes! This drink was pretty good, but as someone who does not like cotton candy or overly sweet drinks, it wasn’t my favorite.
Next, we crafted the Midnight Sky Sangria. This wine and in-house Peach Moonshine based drink also had fresh, muddled blackberries, honey syrup, and apple cider. We were provided with edible gold stars and more blackberries to garnish the drink, and this one turned out very tasty. I am a big sangria fan (as I prefer my alcohol to be more on the mild side), so this was a hit for me.
Lastly, we made the Hocus Pocus, which was by far the most aesthetic drink of the night (and that is saying something since the first two drinks were very fun to make in their own right). This drink had a base of Devil’s Due Vodka, fresh lemonade, lychee syrup, and ginger beer. This created a white substance that immediately started to change into a rich purple color when we added the last ingredient, butterfly pea flower syrup. The part that put this one over the top for me, however, was the “eyeball” we added as a garnish, which was a blueberry wrapped around a lychee. Not only delicious, but also looked so cool!
Experience ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5
Overall, this was such a fun experience. I love the interactive nature of making our own cocktails as opposed to just being served them at a bar. It definitely gave me an even bigger appreciation for bartenders, as my drinks did not look overly professional! I would 100% attend another event like this.
