Hi foodies!  Ryan Laspina back again to talk about one of the coolest spots I have ever visited!  Moy, Ashley, and I were graciously invited out to Mythical Pizza on Tuesday, May 7th to eat some pizza and explore some cryptid sightings!  Follow along as I share why I think this is the quintessential West Virginian restaurant!

Location

Mythical Pizza is located in the Berkeley Springs area of Morgan County, at 1855 Valley Road.  It may be a bit of a drive for our friends in Jefferson County, but it is totally worth a stop (or six).  Berkeley Springs has so much to offer, and this gem is helping to pave the way for bringing people out to explore the restaurants and shops.

Cuisine Type

As the name would imply, Mythical Pizza serves up a lot of pizza.  With so many off-the-wall creations, it will take you many trips to get through the entire menu.  They also offer lots of appetizers, salads, and their very own brand of sodas.

Ambience and Decor

Hands down, this restaurant takes the “pie” for best ambience and decor I have ever seen – not just on the foodies trail, but in my entire life.  When you walk in, you are immediately transported to Appalachia and the quest to spot Bigfoot, Mothman, or the Flatwoods Monster.  The walls are absolutely plastered with cryptid decor, including newspaper clippings of sightings, Vote for Mothman signs, and so much more.  I could have spent hours just looking at all the memorabilia on the walls.  Pro tip – take the time to look at the decor on the bathroom walls too.

Service

The service matched the decor and ambience.  Cal, the GM, was just a pleasure to meet with (more on that later).  He made sure we were taken care of and provided us with all kinds of favorites from Mythical Pizza.  He is just a really great dude and made our experience so much better.  All of the staff lean in heavily on the cryptid lore, wearing hilariously Mythical Pizza-branded shirts.  All three of us may have come home with a new shirt to add to our collection!

Menu and Specialities

Let’s get down to the food!  The menu has a ton of unique pizza options, all named after a popular cryptid.  A Mothman inspired pizza?  Only in West Virginia.  In addition to the pies, they offer all kinds of customizations.  Lots of different crust options, from cheese and pepperoni stuffed crust to Taki-dusted crust.  There are plenty of toppings and cheese options, as well as different drizzles to finish off the pizza.  Mythical Pizza has plenty of appetizers, as well as salads if you are looking for a lighter option.

The coolest part of the entire menu, however, might be their branded colas.  The Cryptid Cola gave us major Fallout vibes (again, a perfect parallel to Fallout 76, which is based in West Virginia).  I love that Mythical Pizza picked a theme and covered every single detail.

Food Quality and Taste

Just because this spot is heavily themed doesn’t mean the food is subpar.  Everything we tried was so fresh and delicious.  Here is a rundown of what we were able to try that evening.

Appetizers/Starters

Each of the apps we tried was named after a popular cryptid.  The Yetis Yummy Chicken Parmesan bites were filled with seasoned chicken.  The Chupacabra Cheesesteak Chunks were juicy and meaty.  But my favorite app was the Jersey Devil Jalapeno Jolts.  I love anything with jalapenos in it, and these were the perfect amount of spice while also being creamy and delicious.  Unfortunately, we were getting close to full already because of how dense and filling these were, but we soldiered on to get all the intel for the Foodies crew!

Pizza

Full disclosure, Mythical Pizza brought out so many different types of pizza for us to try that we were eating pizza for the next couple of days.  However, this gave us an opportunity to try so many different options.  Instead of listing the 10+ pizza flavors I tried over the next few days, I’ll talk about my three favorites.

First, their Grafton Monster Deep Dish was incredible.  I know deep dish can be a polarizing pizza option, but I am a huge fan and it did not disappoint.  Take a look at the cheese pull in the video!  That’s the type of foodie stuff I live for.  So cheesy, flavorful, and extremely satisfying.

Next, their Fast Times at Cheeseburger High was incredible.  It tasted like the best burger around on a pizza slice.  Pickles 100% belong on pizza, so I was loving this slice.  And then lastly, my favorite pizza of the night, the Yeti’s Pepperoni Pie.  I would encourage you to try all their eclectic combinations, but sometimes the classic is the best.  Just incredibly spiced pepperoni covered the entire pizza.  Simple, yet delicious!

Branded Drinks

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the branded sodas Mythical Pizza has for purchase.  There are at least 10 different options to choose from.  We tried the aforementioned Cryptid Cola which was their take on Coke or Pepsi.  We also had the Flatwoods Fantasie Orange soda which was their take on Orange Crush or Orange Fanta.  Both were so crisp and refreshing, and the bottle art is just sensational.

Some additional flavors we did not try but will be in the future include Cheat River Lemon-Lime (Sprite, Starry, etc.), Jersey Devil Ginger Ale, Fresno Nightcrawler Glowing Grape Soda, and Perilous Pineapple.  Such a cool idea, I need to collect every bottle!

Portion Size and Pricing

If you want fairly priced, filling pizza, Mythical Pizza is the spot for you!  All of the pies are between $14 and $20, which is more than reasonable.  Their appetizers are all under $10 as well.  It is so worth the trip down to Berkeley Springs!

Overall Experience and Recommendation

We have had the honor of going to quite a few of the tastiest restaurants the Eastern Panhandle and surrounding areas have to offer.  Mythical Pizza stands right up there with the best.  The food was incredible and should not be discounted just because the ambience and decor is out of this world.  I can safely say I have never been to a restaurant that had better theming than Mythical Pizza.  Go for the cryptids, stay for the pizza and sodas.  You will not be disappointed if you take a trip up to Berkeley Springs to try this gem.  Go today!
